MotoGP » Dall'Igna: New engine ‘first step’ for 2015 Ducati

re: "Concensus appears to be that Ducatis engine is too long." consensus was that the earth was flat, and WMD's were in Iraq. beware the perils of "group think". the long engine is the V2. don't mix your 90's. the V4 in contrast, is not only 200cc's smaller, but has it's displacement spread across 4 cylinders. cylinders arranged SIDE BY SIDE, thus compacting the engine considerably. you must unlearn what you have learned. (Yoda voice) what you lose in length, you gain back in width so don't go thinking it's a completely "free lunch" scenario (I know how you guys love that). so with extra journals on the crank, it's of course wider than Twin, but still not as wide as an M1. re: "Previously Duc have tilted the motor backwards" yup, we're 2 seasons into it. and just like I said back then, it's turned out NOT to be the cure-all/panacea laymen made it out to be. hint: it's the chassis.

re: "Ducati's is noticably longer than Honda or Yamaha" well, the Yamaha anyway. the 213's no Morris Mini, neither was the V5 that preceded it. but hey guess what Honda does have...? A: decades of experience manufacturing and racing their OWN aluminium frames. that's still the one thing that eludes DucAudi, and until such time they roll up their sleeves and go hammer/tongs (be it solo or via subcontractor)...? it's going to keep coming back to this, watch. as talented as he may be, simply poaching Louie doesn't create this condition.

re: "Any shortness achieved by switching to air-bags (they are only pneumatic in the sense that the valve spring has been replaced by an air bag) would be minimal." YAHHTZEEE...! pneumatics are only used for putting the valve back on it's seat which desmo does with a rocker arm. no matter the poison picked (be it air, desmo, or spring), they're ALL fundamentally using some form of OHC to lift the valve OFF it's seat. right then, until you figure out a way to get rid of the cam and the need for it's corresponding journals and oiling system, you ain't doing much of dikk to reduce head height. oh wait, we've already seen this movie, it's called the 2-STROKE.

re: "Things we don't know are: What the true capacity of the each manufacturers bikes is." no replacement for displacement... on my authority, you can go ahead and assume everybody (and their nana's) are a full 998cc swept volume. for cost and reliability reasons better to just sort the hard parts at max capacity from the off. you can use electrics for the rest. Ducati taught Honda and Yamaha a hard lesson in '07 about the folly of "bringing a knife to a gun fight". that lil' stunt forced the Japanese to spend MULTI-MILLIONS making over their top ends. again guys, software is cheap compared to this stuff. especially when you don't get it right the first time (which neither of them did). even more recently with the RCV1000 debacle, the reoccurring theme once more is "you don't want to be THAT GUY searching for power". better to already have it, you can then make it come and go (as needed) with a mouse click.
