MotoGP » Why Ben Spies won't have a 'rookie test'

A lot of uptight folks on here. Poncharal is saying nothing new here. He has opposed the extra test from the outset. It has nothing to do with Ben Spies arrogance. Poncharal has ajob to do and a budget to meet. If the added cost of this test (for only one of his riders) is weighed against the total team benefit it becomes an easy decision. For a team to spend that much money to send a single rider and all of his support staff and Materiel half way round the world, you better be getting your moneys worth!

Kind of surprised by Colin in 3rd but overall not too much disagreement. It kind of paints a good picture for what is to come though. Honda have a few young rookies and Melandri in position now to light a fire under the Repsol guys. Yamaha has Spies positioned to step into whatever seat is vacated on the Fiat (if it would still be Fiat backed sans Vale is anyone's guess) squad. Ducati hasn't really got anyone at that level to step in and take over for Casey or Nicky yet so they would be forced to headhunt for new (Rossi?) talent. Suzuki???

Dovi had what we in the US call a "Sophomore slump" in 2009. By all means he should have been at worst 5th place in the championship. Those three consecutive DNF's plus the retirement at Sepang cost him dearly. To have been beaten by a privateer is even worse. A team manager may be understanding if he had been beaten by another factory rider but this will surely put him on the burner to perform next season. If you look at the races he finished (worst finish was 8th)he did the job. But that is the game isn't it! You just cant have 4 dnf's and wonder why you are out in the cold.

This guy is an unfortunate victim of the MotoGP popularity contest and the current financial meltdown. If times were better he would no doubt have a ride. But in the big picture the sponsors rule and he is just not as easily marketable as some of the others. To be one of only 10 guys in the paddock who has actually won a MotoGP race and not have a ride is testament to the troubled times at hand. He will do well in Moto2 I suspect. Moto2 itself I fear is going to be in for a lot of heat though. The testing so far does not bode well for a what is being billed as a true "replacement" for the 250's. It is what it is though!
