Every rider is going to push the bike to see what it can do. Not over the limit, of course, but they have to at least get up to race pace in order to provide useful feedback for the engineers. When a riders says, "hey I don't care about lap times, I just want to get comfortable", it's a polite way of saying, "I pushed it but still it wasn't very fast. We've got a lot of work to do."
