Renault row stalls Williams engine decision
It is important to note regarding the total km/reliability done that Mercedes have 6 engines in use, Ferrari Toyota and Renault have 4 engines in use and BMW have 2 engines in use.

Maybe it will be good and of interest to look at engine reliability. These statistics are now absolute but of interest all the same. As it has traditionally been happening for a long time now these statistics are as per the and up to the BRITISH GP at Silverstone, 1, Total distance in kilometers covered by all teams engines was 115,430.347km. 2, Most reliable engines, Ferrari 056 have done 22,200km and Toyota RVX 09 have done 26700km, both with no engine related problems. 3,.Third most reliable are Mercedes bends F108 with only one engine problem for nearly 33,000km. 4, The Renault R27 and BMW P86/9 have both had 2 engines blow, with the Renault doing over 22,200km and the BMW doing over 11,100km.

Renault row stalls Williams engine decision
4, Now to come to the all important point of the all conquering v8, it is absurd to be sure/convinced and right of something but lacking the why and how, that is why these lengthy posts/explanations were felt needed. The very simple thing and a good example is the race between the turtle/tortoise and the hare, the hare was very fast of the line but at about the halfway mark it had to reduce it’s speed/RPM just so to be able to get to the finish line. In short they both had the same power of the line, but!!!

3, As can be made out/seen the width of the power band is 2500/3500rpm, inside this band lays peak torque speed and peak power speed plus 500rpm capability beyond it’s peak power speed this without sudden loss of power or engine damage, this capability is needed so the driver will be able to make good use of the power band, changing gear the engine will drop between 1000/2000rpm upon each gear change, also of interest is the shell we call it punishment sort of, of gear changing up or dawn while on the move, the throttle/pedal is kept floored, the clutch is not used, the change takes place by the moving of the selector fork and the cutting off and on of the ignition.

2, The following will have to be understood and kept in mind to appreciate things which can get a bit complicated. The time during which the F1 car operates at maximum rpm is extremely small compared with the time spend accelerating in order to reach this maximum, only to brake for the next bend, that is the way an F1 engine spends it’s lifetime, the lifetime expected of the F1 engine are two race weekends were the engine will cover something like 1500km, these 1500km are spend mostly at between 18500rpm and 15000rpm, these are facts/numbers which only the very best engineering can achieve.

1, All F1 engines of today has the peak torque speed and peak power speed and of course the maximum rpm all in the same ball park to such an extant that the differences doesn’t effect car speed, this state of affairs was reached because maximum rpm, torque and power speeds were all stalled by the killing of the HP race, which means things are no more a moving target so everybody reached /stalled at the same point. NOTE, we will reach the why and how there is a dominant v8 later.

Happy to oblige, I fully understand your correct line of thinking/explaining about torque and power bands and again you are correct in everything you said, but it doesn’t apply to modern F1 engines any more now a days. The line of thinking now a days is simple, IF YOU HAVEN’T GOT TOP END POWER IN F1 you are dead. Johnson this is going to be interesting but a bit lengthy it will take me about 3 posts so if you are interested stay on line.the posts will be a continuation.

Renault row stalls Williams engine decision
About the all conquering v8 I will some time give an explanation as to how and why this is so, it will be very interesting for some, at least those who wants to hear and are interested technically. I will do this as I was one that always maintained and still do, that all engines in f1 are all in the same ballpark HP wise.

By hypocrites you mean like Williams are? I cannot understand what you mean by Mercedes doing anything noble to Williams/Ferrari or Cosworth,if you mean to Cosworth, Cosworth have the right to retune the 2006 CA V8 in any way they deem fit to get them on par with the manufacturers engines.
