F1 » Hamilton maintains McLaren backing

richard all one has to read Mr Whitmarsh saying Lewis made a mistake and later commenting on another interview and rather begrudgingly how "appropriate to take this opportunity," to thank his soon to be ex driver for writing "a huge chapter of his life and career with us, and was, and always will be, a fine member of an exclusive club: the McLaren world champions' club." I'd say Martin has been sucking those lemons the past two days.

F1 » Hamilton’s Mercedes deal confirmed

Angelina, in Petrov's case its about sponsorship money as well as talent. There are some drivers who pay a team so they can race. Petrov had backing with the Russian Government now that had stopped. If that backing was still there, then Caterham would have retained his services or another team that is need of funds would have signed him. Petrov's manager had announced negotiations for a 2013 drive halted because he had no funds. Its not only about talent but also business. Why do you think McLaren found the appeal of Sergio Perez? Apart from his speed and talent he brings in huge sponsors from Latin America mainly Telmex. Big teams need the sponsorship money as well because sponsors come and go. F1 is a business these days.

F1 » F1 2012 POLL: Has Lewis made right call going to Mercedes?

richard, yes it is true Lewis and McLaren's relationship has been stale for some time no even longer. Frankly I do not blame him for wanting to leave even though McLaren did match Mercs offer. As for the Jacques Villenueve comparison in terms of the move lets remember that Jacques did not have a Ross Brawn by his side but his manager Craig Pollock who had no idea what he was getting into. So can Ross Brawn pull a miracle? Lets see. It took him, Jean Todt and Rory Byrne and Schumi 3 years to get an ailing Ferrari back on its feet and he did rescue Jenson Button's career when he bought the Honda Team. One bright side is at least Simon Fuller isn't stepping in as Team boss. That would have been a bigger disaster. :)

F1 » F1 2012 POLL: Has Lewis made right call going to Mercedes?

@Richard, Aren't the actors that get invited to the Red Bull garage part of Pop Culture as well? Seriously the celebrities that are seen hobnobbing at the McLaren garage are no different from the dignitaries and athletes invited by the other teams since they all wind up on the gossip columns one way or another. Oh and did Lewis make a big mistake signing with Merc? Part of me feels it. Have to go. 3am Monday here. Gotta sleep.

F1 » F1 2012 POLL: Has Lewis made right call going to Mercedes?

richard, you are forgetting Red Bull. They often invite celebs when the team was chosen by big name movie studios to promote their films. Have you forgotten at a Monaco GP that the Pit Crews were dressed up like Storm Troopers for Phantom Menace and DC once wore Superman race overalls for the Superman reboot? I'ms sure they invite celebrities. They need them for PR. Its not only McLaren that attracts Hollywood. Jaguar even sponsored Ocean's 11 and had George Clooney and Brad Pitt as guests at one Monaco GP. Its not that big Paddock and I'm sure guests celebs and bigwigs go around and visit some if not all of the teams garage.
