F1 » Mercedes: Easier for engine manufacturers to come in now

He's right in one respect, these engines are not really all that special. The rulebook is extremely restrictive so there are really only one or two engine layouts that work. Honda and Renault engines will look exactly the same as the Mercedes in 2017. The problem is that while the engines are not really that complicated, they still are extremely expensive. One can guess as to why. If a manufacturer wants to use racing to develop road car technology they go to WEC (where the engines are already way more advanced and that gap will only grow). If they want to sell their brand they go to F1.

F1 » Pirelli: F1 ignored our request to limit laps

This is utterly ridiculous. What the hell is Pirelli doing? If they had just come out and said 'sometimes a tyre fails, it happens. We'll look into it' nothing would have happened. This statement only makes things worse, because what they share is completely irrelevant. They asked for it, the FIA denied it so what has that got to do with anything? Surely it is possible to construct a tyre that just loses grip when it's been driven on too long instead of exploding. Vettel's times weren't even that bad yet, Grosjean was only a couple of tenths faster. They seem hellbent on their own destruction. They are basically saying if a driver gets killed because of a blown tyre it's sometimes his own fault for driving it too hard or too long. Ludicrous.
