MotoGP » Ben Spies retires from racing

Not surprised and very glad he has retired as what would happen next year would only tarnish his rep even more. In a very early race in his first year in MotoGP at Phillip Island he shower what would ultimately destroy his career: he refused to practice because it was too windy. He consistently played it safe in tricky conditions and this is what cost him he ride with the factory Yamaha and was told not to show up at Leguna if he wasn't ready to give 100%. It wasn't that he wasn't hugely talented, he just was too cautious.

MotoGP » de Angelis to replace Ben Spies at US MotoGP

As I understand it Spies tore the tendons on his shoulder which is much bigger deal than a broken collar bone. He had I think 4 months with the shoulder immobile which had to atrophy the muscles which is his current problem. . But beyond that he seems to lack the toughness of Crutchlow on Lorenzo in shrugging off injury or adverse conditions. Assuming he is able to return at Indy at full strength, I think he is spooked and will never be a front runner indeed if he even stays in racing.
