For all the hype it's getting now they switched to Mercedes powah, the Locust isn't all that great itself. They now have that sweet Merc engine but they're still miles off the pace of not only Merc AMG but also Williams. Coming off of two good years in 2012 and 2013 it seems like everyone is thinking last year's troubles were all down to Renault and now they can go right back to the podium again but don't forget they're still a bit underfunded despite the millions Genii poured in and the coin Pastor brings and as a result they lost a couple of key people who made the 2012 and 2013 competitive. I would say that in race trim if they don't have any issues they're the fourth team but IMO too far behind Williams and mostly because RBR and STR have to turn down the engine in the race to make it to the end. Put the Merc unit in the STR or RBR and I reckon they'd both go quite a bit faster than the Lotus chassis.

I definitely think the kid is the real deal. Fair disclosure I'm Dutch but still I think I can be pretty objective (as far as anyone can be anyway). As he was already being touted as the next big thing for Dutch motorsport for a while before this year I saw some of his races in F3 and he just does some special things in the car sometimes that immediate convince you of his talent. Particularly the weekend at Spa last year was fantastic, the moves he made offensively and defensively on Ocon were top notch. Then to win all three races that weekend at Spa and follow it up with 3 race wins on a wet Norisring the race weekend after...that in itself should be enough for everyone to conclude the obvious. But...I also think like Alonso said once, miracles don't exist in F1. I certainly don't expect him to beat Sainz every race, Carlos is no slouch. If Max can get 1 or two eye catching results this year and end the year with more points that's great.

Agreed. Refueling serves no purpose if they're still going to limit the amount of fuel to be used, that makes no sense at all. Also more downforce and possibly wider tyres is going to mean the cars can't follow close enough to overtake again cause they'll be losing downforce and damaging the tires while following too close. The best way to improve 'the show' IMO is to add a bunch more horsepower while not adding more downforce. That's also what makes the cars a challenge to drive for the drivers and it makes it easier to overtake. I also feel that in general it's a mistake to focus on cost cutting, cause it's just going to mean F1 is no longer bleeding edge and why as a sponsor should I pay tens of millions a year to be on a car that no longer has that technology halo around it.

A little bit hard to argue you're not a pay driver when the entire livery of the car you drive consists of the colors and logos of your sponsor and you're in the car despite the team already having signed other drivers simply because you bring even more money to the table than said other drivers :D The whole discussion is a bit of a mute point though, every driver has been to some extent a pay driver during his or her carreer. Simple enough if your family doens't have the means/will/time to fund and support you in your early days in karting or junior formulae, that where's it ends immediately. Even champions like the aforementioned Lauda, but also Schumacher and Alonso initially got into F1 by paying for a seat, either with their own money in case of Lauda or with help from a personal backer.

Guttierez 3rd, Senna and Vit both got a 2nd. vdG a couple of 5ths but he won WSBR before that. Nasr actually got thumped his 1st year in GP2 by Davide Valsecchi. Granted it was his first year and Davide was a veteran at that point but still, he ultimately ended up 10th with no victories while his teammate won the championship. Let's just say I'm not convinced Nasr is better than most of those guys...I just think Ericsson is a bit slow.

Liam94: Just because someone brings a lot of money to a team doesn't mean they don't deserve to be there. Alonso brought a lot of a Santander money to Ferrari for example. Nasr does bring a huge amount of money with him (I read almost enough to run a 3 rider MotoGP team for an entire season) but he does have a lot of promise as well, a lot more than Ericsson, Chilton, VDG, Gutierrez, Petrov, Senna etc etc all had. If he gets the results (which although there has only been one round he's done so far, and outperformed comfortably his more experienced teammate) then the pay driver tag will soon go away.
Meh...don't really agree on the promise bit. He got a 3rd in GP2...yay. I saw most of the races and he got that 3rd more on the basis of consistency and not so much on speed. He did 3 seasons in GP2 and got 2 feature race victories, 2 sprint race victories and only one pole. They always say you can learn consistency but you can't learn raw pace. The others you na

I wonder if some media outlet somewhere dares to touch these papers. I bet some obscure site looking for a bunch of quick internet hits is willing to take the risk and then it'll spread like wildfire. Just a matter of can the douchelord who stole this stuff find a douchelord to buy this quick enough before he gets caught. A sad state of affairs once again, but hey I guess not much has changed over the last 30 odd years. IIRC there were some 'journalists' posing as doctors to get access to Ronnie Peterson in hospital after he had his accident as well. Another sad reminder of what some people are capable off. I guess this is how day by day we get older, wiser and sadder...

These comments aren't as much directed towards Renault as to the FIA. This is the inevitable result of the engine freeze regulations which can't be sustained if any of the manufacturers has a noticeable advantage over the others. You can't expect the other teams to try and overcome a simple power deficit for years to come. So now the lobbying is taken up a notch. FA's comment that 'Mercedes advantage can't be overcome' and all the talk about Ferrari leaving F1 for Le Mans or a new 'GP1' series is for the same reason. These are veiled threats to the FIA that ultimately come down to: 'guys if we don't get the chance to have the same power as the other guys engine freeze be damned, we're out of here and you can't afford to lose us so give us what we want.' In this case the strong arm tactics are justifiable, cause it's a stupid rule that goes agianst of what F1 is about.
