F1 » Six of the Best: Mismatched team-mates

A lot of these, especially the older ones, are due to the team not really having two equal cars. The best known and documented case probably being Schumacher at Benetton. The FIA actually proved that Schuey's '94 car had illegal software in it for launch control/traction control that could be activated by pressing an elaborate sequence of button's on the steering wheel. The official reason for not disqualifying him completely from the championship was because they couldn't prove Schuey had actually used it (come on). The real reason was onbviously cause it would have been a PR nightmare to do so in the wake of Senna's accident. That was probably the dirtiest championship ever won with the fuel ring incident, the illegal software and the clash with Hill in Australia. But with Flava 'crashgate' Flav on the pitwall and Schuey Adelaide 94, Jerez 97, Monaco 06 behind the wheel not surprising I guess

F1 » Lotus confirms Palmer for 2016 F1 race drive

Didn't really see that coming. I tend to agree with Firefly that this isn't the most obvious choice that Ren-0 would make. Also not really convinced of Jolyon's ultimate talent. Yes, he won the GP2 series last year. It was his 4th year. Pastor won it as well 4th time around. In the first three seasons Jolyon was 28th, 11th and 7th...Not quite the results that make you take notice and a lot worse than F1 also-rans like for instance Charles Pic, vd Garde, Ericsson, Nasr and Guttierez achieved. Pastor as well did quite a bit better with an 11th, 5th and 6th before taking the title. Finally in de FP outings he had he has generally been outperformed, which may be sort of expected but the biggest talents would probably show at least once or twice that they can beat the regulars. So I'm guessing a thank you for paying a few bills to keep the team afloat this year. I wonder what happens next year, whether the takeover happens or not.

F1 » Lotus confirms Palmer for 2016 F1 race drive

MrJones85:
Michael Damgaard:
MrJones85: Is he doing the pay thing also?
Palmer will bring private money and his Comma sponsor...
Very lame! I should've known. Question, After Button & Hamilton are there any British drivers in the pipeline that has the talent to stick on the grid without paying for it?
From a non-British perspective I think Alex Lynn is 'your' best prospect. Wouldn't be my first choice of young drivers for F1 but he has decent enough results to sort of get to F1 on merit. GP3 champion and currently 5th in his first GP2 season is not bad at all. Although the fact that Haryanto and Sirotkin are in front of him and his teammate is pretty close could be signs that he isn't super good...but I do think good enough for the F1 midfield, which is nothing to be embarassed about these days. With few exceptions I think the F1 field is pretty good these days. The Mazzacane's have left the building.

F1 » Ricciardo unsure on value of engine upgrade

Just read they're not going to use the new engine. As I read that I felt a slowly growing annoyance with Red Bull and their politicking suddenly boiled over. So you got your special financial deal with Bernie. Ok, Ferrari has one too so why not try to get one for yourself, although the classier move would be to try and get every team the same kind of deal since you seem to be so in favour of a level playing field in other areas when it suits you like engine equality. Why hello there, double standard! Also on another note you're not Ferrari who've been there since 1950. Then you bash you're engine partner you've won 4 championships with all year and when they come up with a better engine you snub them? Come on, everyone knows 1 10-place gridpenalty for even something like maybe 10 extra horses for 4 entire races/qualys is a no-brainer. 'ooh, ooh, if you don't give us exactly what we want we'll leave and take 4 cars away...ooh' It's reached that point IMO: don't let the door hit ya.

F1 » McLaren confirms Kevin Magnussen exit

...
Exactly. Apparently we have a case of not being allowed to say a driver from Scandinavia wasn't actually that good again. I don't know what it is but it's weird, Kovalainen reloaded. Come on guys the naked facts: Magnussen lost the qualy duel vs Button 9-10 and scored 55 points to Button's 126 (43.7 prct). That's a big points difference. Even if you expect him to score a bit less points given that it is his rookie year and Button has tons of experience. Plus he should have at least won the qualy duel as a young gun against Button who is not known for his blistering pace in qualy. To make it even more objective and damning facts: Perez who was let go after one year in 2013 actually did much better in comparison. He won the qualy duel 10-9 and got 49 points compared to Button's 73 (67.1 prct). Count me unimpressed.

F1 » Magnussen: Shame it didn’t work out…

The birthday bit is typical McLaren douchebaggery, but the sacking is just the simple rules of F1 that usually apply, if you're not good enough, you're out. Personally I'd be surprised if he gets another shot in F1, most of the good seats are taken already and I don't believe he has millions of dollars of backing to get a seat at Manor. The only seat that's sort of open and may not require tons of dough to get is the one at Ren-0, but I'd take a number of drivers before Magnussen if I were Ren-0, for instance Vergne or Stoffel or even Frijns. After all Robin beat Magnussen (and Jules Bianchi RIP) to the title in WSBR in his first year.

F1 » Haas move a 'great opportunity' for Grosjean

ZEDX: Haas wanted a "European" flavour to his new team, didn't he? Probably decided to play-down the " all-American conquerors" label that his entry was in danger of getting (and mindful of previous US teams ignominious failures), plus he couldn't get a superstar US driver anyway! ...
I'm guessing cause they know they can't cut it in F1. Some of the frontrunners in 'Murican open wheel racing like Rahal and Marco have raced in Europe (A1GP and F1 testing in case of Andretti) and didn't exactly set the world on fire. IIRC in testing with Honda F1, Marco was 2 seconds off the pace. Since no 'Murican drivers in IRL are thrashing these guys on a regular basis it stands to reason that they too wouldn't be quick enough. Well except Montoya maybe, but he's not from the US of A.

You omit to mention the naked fact that 2013 was Perez's third year in F1 (after two years at Sauber), 2014 was Magnussen's first year.
No I didn't actually, but 4 agrees testify to the fact that you can't say anything realistic about Scandinavian drivers here. Even accounting for the rookie year factor, it's still a pretty skinny points haul. And mind you, they sacked Perez as well. Maybe with experience he'd have come a bit closer to Perez' performance, sure, but then it'd still not be good enough.

F1 » Sainz 'can be selfish' when needed

Birdysoft: Strange comments from a driver who is most overtaken during this round of F1 championship. Needs to think about what he is talking about i think.
That however is also partly due to his good qualifyings, if you manage to put the car in a place it has no business being in qualifying in front of some less well performing drivers in better cars, chances are they'll still get you in the race cause it's more difficult to keep a better car behind in the race than it is in qualy. Same thing more or less applied for Jarno Trulli and the so-called Trulli-train...for the most part that wasn't the result of Trulli being a bad racer. but moreso a result of him being an epic qualifier (before his time at Caterham that is).

F1 » Dennis rebukes Alonso over ‘unprofessional’ race comments

Obviously biting his tongue almost the entire year up till now and having these comments this race in Japan is no coincidence. Probably he thinks he can shame the Honda top brass into building a better engine. Problem is unless the rules change (which they should, but probably won't until at least 2017) there's almost no way they can make serious inroads and stay whithin the rules. I still suspect Ferrari of going ahead and changing more than they were allowed under the threat of going away if the powers that be didn't let them get away with it. How else are you gonna get the best part of a hundred horsies out of your engine that your engineers already developed to have maximum power in the first place with not just one but almost two hands tied behind your back... Funnily enough, Alonso doesn't really have anywhere to go, McLaren is stuck with Honda not least financially. The only question is whether Honda will lose more face by sticking around getting thrashed or by quitting.
