MOTOGP » Spies: We didn't have enough

Interesting to hear the comments on the motogp.com video feed from Ian Wheeler regarding the different spec of bikes Jorge and Ben are now running. Latest software for JL and an extra 4-5bhp over the Spies spec bike apparently. Only to be expected I guess, when he's leaving for a rival manufacturer next year.

MOTOGP » Moto2: Scott Redding signs for 2013

Scott's PR might say he's happy to stay in Moto2 but after the interest from Ducati and Gresini, it has to be a disappointment that he's not moving up to MotoGP. I think his physical size would make him a better candidate for the senior class. And it's yet another indictment of Ducati's half-assed decision making process that he should have been led on with 2 tests and then dumped with no further word or explanation from them.

MOTOGP » Rueful Crutchlow clings to Motegi positives

@Frankie The reason Crutchlow's bike ran dry is because he was on his own for almost all of the race, and didn't have the advantage of running in anyone's slipstream, which is what conserves fuel. Dovi also ran out of fuel on the slow down lap, and the only reason his bike didn't run dry during the race too is because his lap times were slower and because he spent about 8 laps behind other riders, when the engine uses less gas.

MOTOGP » Rueful Crutchlow clings to Motegi positives

"A bad race strategy"?? So are you saying he should have slowed and dropped back behind another rider and tucked into his slipstream to conserve fuel? Because that's the only thing he could have done differently to eke out a more km's of juice. The bike simply wasn't fueled sufficiently to allow for the race distance to be run almost entirely in clean air.

MOTOGP » Rueful Crutchlow clings to Motegi positives

The reason Cal ran out of fuel while the other riders didn't is simply that he spent the majority of the race on his own in clean air, which is heavier on fuel. Dovi for example ran exactly the same fuel load, but because he spent quite a few laps in the slipstream of other riders he had enough left at the end. That's all there is to it.

MOTOGP » Brakes blamed for Ben Spies Motegi exit

Well I posted yesterday about the likelihood of brake problems for Spies at some point, and after a crash and several run-ons in QP and WU, I think the chances of him running the entire race without incident were probably pretty slim. It seems that the Spies/Yamaha partnership is still firmly operating on the principles of Murphy's Law: If anything can go wrong it will.

MOTOGP » Motegi, Japan Moto3 - Race Results

Great to see #52 finally showing the kind of aggression and determination that's needed to win races in this class. His promotion to Moto2 with Tech 3 is now looking well deserved. No idea why Cortese threw a tantrum afterwards - the pass was clean, and he's put far harsher moves on Kent this year.

MOTOGP » Spies: We had pace for front row

Nevertheless Petrolbonce, Spies' calipers DID overheat and stick in practice, and Crutchlow's were likewise shown glowing red hot - both 2 of the heavier guys in the field. When you're taking about the tiniest fractions of a second in performance differential, then greater mass and higher load transfer will make a difference. And whether that difference is 27%, 9% or 2%, there will be a point at which braking efficiency will be compromised. It's Physics 101.
