Good and bad for Cal yesterday. He's obviously taken a step forward in pace - so much so that he can run with the factory guys for a race now. That's very encouraging.. The question mark is still over racecraft, because knowing how fast Rossi was closing it would perhaps have been better to let him through and then follow rather than trying to resist him. I believe he might have taken the fading Pedrosa for 4th that way. I think with hindsight he might be a little more disappointed with his decisions out on track rather than with his M1's power deficit. A strong effort nonetheless, and there'll be circuits on the calendar where outright top speed isn't so critical.

The one statistic that is worth bearing in mind is that every year that Crutchlow has remained in a championship he has performed significantly better than the year before. Riders mature at different rates, just as they peak at different stages, which is why it's not really relevant how he's performed against any given rider in the past. The only question now is how much more he has improved for this year, and just how far that improvement can take him.

Sepang has neve been a strong track for Cal but his best time from this test is almost half a second faster than he's ever managed around here before. Based on that, you'd have to think the improvement curve from last year is still ongoing, and that when we get to tracks he does go well on (e.g. Brno, Philip Island, Silverstone) he'll have more to offer still. Hopefully Yamaha will maintain a good level of support to Tech 3 this year, so that the bikes don't get left behind by the competition.

Stefan Bradl posted a 2'01.89 on his first Sepang test, so Smith's 2'02.09 compares decently. I see him scrapping with the Ducatis at the beginning of the season, and then beginning to bridge the gap to the likes of Bautista, Bradl and Cal as he gains confidence and experience. I think Tech 3 will look after him very carefully and make sure he doesn't try too hard too soon. No chance of bagging Rookie of the Year though, unfortunately.
