MotoGP » Crutchlow: I could be replaced by Espargaro

@ RocketR1 No doubt in the early stages of negotiations with Ducati, Crutchlow did use their interest as a bargaining chip. But things nonetheless progressed from there to the point of a verbal agreement for him to sign, and Ducati bosses even phoned Poncharal to notify him of the deal. But the whole thing came apart at precisely the same time that rumours of Rossi leaving Ducati to go back to Yamaha gathered momentum. Once it became clear VR was leaving, Ducati knew they needed an accomplished development rider to replace him. Which Cal never was. Hence Dovi. The whole thing was decided on the grounds of practicality and merit rather than anything said on Twitter.

@ RocketR1 "Cal...talked himself out of the Factory Ducati ride" That's a complete internet myth. The situation at Ducati had nothing to do with who said what and everything to do with Rossi's decision to leave the team. Had Rossi not left, then Cal would have joined the team as planned. VR's departure turned everything on its head and left the team with potentially no development continuity, hence the cancelling of the proposed line-up.

MotoGP » Crutchlow: I could be replaced by Espargaro

For me the objectionable element of this story is not that Cal is to leave Tech 3 - it's meant to be a feeder team for the works squad after all, and 3 years is enough for any rider to keep a ride there - but that the goalposts are yet again to be moved for a Spanish rider. Already we've seen the rookie rule overturned for Marquez, and now it seems as though Tech 3 is to receive factory equipment for Espargaro - something they've never had before, even when Spies (a factory- contracted rider) was with them. How much longer before there's a Spanish lock out on all factory rides at Yamaha and Honda?

@ Larry "you can count him out of contention for a factory seat." I believe Cal has a very reasonable chance of a factory ride - just not with Yamaha. I think next year might well see him moving to either the Suzuki or Ducati factory squad. Neither of them particularly coveted rides, unfortunately, other than in terms of salary. But then it's hard to foresee any rider outside of Spain or Italy being on a factory Honda or Yamaha for some time to come.

MotoGP » MotoGP Jerez: Top three for Crutchlow on day one

@ 432 Given that Crutchlow is 'constantly improving', as you point out, then what he did last year is irrelevant. He's clearly already a better rider than he was then so you can't take what happened last year or the year before as a predictor for the future. What will determine his quality as a rider is how he performs in the future rather than in the past. Interesting story on MCN about engineers from the factory team going to the Tech 3 garage today to take a peek at Cal's data for Rossi and JL. Yamaha are certainly taking notice.
