Cycle News caught up with Spies again moments ago and he explained what happened in his crash. According to the Texan, unlike on the Yamaha he rode last year, traction control on the Ducati doesn't become enabled until you shift into second gear. Spies was in first gear out of the pits and through the first few corners on his outlap when he was highsighsided in turn four - having not yet shifted into second gear. "On the Yamaha, unless you were in launch control, the TC is turned on," Spies explained. "On the Ducati the TC doesn't come on until you're in second gear. I guess I should have known that or someone should have told me."

From Sylvain Guintoli interview Crash.net: Can you put your finger on what makes the Ducati Desmosedici so difficult? Sylvain Guintoli: If I knew, I'd probably still be there. In short, I don't know. I'm not the only one who broke his **** on that bike. It's a very different bike in many ways and at the time it was also different to the one they're using now, we were using the tubular frame. It's a bike I enjoyed riding but it just wasn't fast. To this day there was only one rider who could make the bloody thing work. Some people say the front end is vague but if you look at how Casey was using it, you could say there was no massive problem with the bike because he could do it. He's not a bloody magician, he just understood it. Either he was more clever or more brave, whatever, he was permanently 'on it' on that bike. We had his data available to us and I remember looking at it and thinking ''F**king hell, this guy is entering every corner like he doesn't want to get out'.

@RFS131 He did go back to previous position and that's exactly why it wasn't illegal and he why he wasn't penalized. Again, what a bs you are talking. After corkscrew move Rossi never back to previous position, it was in lap 14. Paolo Ciabatti stated his viewpoint very clearly: "If I was in the place of Race Direction at Laguna Seca in 2008, I would have given Rossi a ride through."

@ RFS 131 Absolutely bs. 1) Rossi's both wheels was out of track and then he goes to Stoner racing line forcing him very wide. If you ask me, race direction should gave him at least "go back to previous position" 2) After that Rossi brake check Stroner in turn 11 which is not illegal, but is desparete unsporting move, thats why Stoner was so mad about him.

Spies' recovery is taking a very long time, an indication of the seriousness of the injury. The shoulder is the most complicated joint in the body, and Spies suffered serious soft tissue damage. Such injuries are slow to heal - Valentino Rossi estimated that he wasn't really at 100% for 6 or 7 months after his shoulder surgery in November 2010 - and can be delayed if not handled properly. Spies' decision to go testing in Malaysia, three months after his surgery, proved to be the wrong one. When he then tried to make a second return at Mugello, he quickly realized his shoulder was still not strong enough, and it needed more time to recover fully. Riding with his shoulder still weak would have been dangerous, not just for him but for other riders. He had decided to return only once he was 100% fit and ready and able to ride a racing motorcycle. Before making a final decision to race, Spies would test himself on a race bike, preferably his MotoGP bike.
