Strange. On the one hand they let supposedly bigger sports like NFL dictate their season timings. On the other hand they make things totally artificial by not penalising technical infringements with anything other than token fines. Even a gram underweight will give a performance advantage, so £$500 sounds laughably lenient - how much money will the team make from the extra attention and exposure from the win? Makes me think a series that neglects its soul to chase a new market will get neither (only 5000 fans at Fontana)...

I'm pretty content that the safety is justifiable in view of the close-quarters thrills, after the changes made during the month of May at least. The four crashes involved ten cars, eliminating seven, but only two left the ground and none had particularly hard hits. The safety improvements to the DW12 have held up well in all manner of crashes. Indeed, the only injury today was to a Coyne pit worker - those guys must all be considering switching to something safer, like bomb disposal or testing polystyrene bungee ropes. The crowd figures are disturbing though, and I wonder if the TV figures were much better. Maybe the tide was turning towards NASCAR in the US by 1995 anyway, but clearly not enough people were expecting a thrilling occasion with drivers and cars they wanted to see. Maybe having two other rounds in Florida (albeit a road course and a street course) is just diluting the fanbase too much?

de Cesaris would struggle to make a comeback. Despite medical advances in recent years, death remains a significant handicap. Interesting stuff despite my nitpicking. I think the trend of 'youngest-ever' records tumbling and 'oldest-ever' records being fairly locked is common across multiple sports - imagine Rooney playing professionally at 50 as Stanley Matthews did, or Alastair Cook playing internationals in his 50s as WG Grace did. Records requiring an even and unpredictable field, or a team with dominance being willing and able to fully exert that dominance, also seem untouchable with the modern nature of F1. IN a modern context, winning a race after Q1 elimination would probably match Watson's accomplishment, but I can't recall anyone coming close here either.

A shame about the aero-kit farce taking points away from qualifying, the total Chevrolet dominance, and the incompetence of the Coyne team. But still a fantastic race and a very worthy winner - when Montoya had to pit with rear wing damage I assumed he'd lose a lap, and even when he didn't I had no expectations of a big result. Power has clearly improved as an oval racer over time too.
