RR » TT2014: Karl Harris loses life in Superstock incident

Agreed. It's not part of a championship so nobody's forced to take part, they all know the risks, and the field is mostly enthusiasts who are older and have families and commitments, yet are still there to give it a go. Losing two prominent names from the circuit racing scene on the roads this year is a big hit, but it's still a choice for consenting adults to make.

F1 » Roland Ratzenberger, remembered by David Brabham

Sorry to nitpick, but Roland was the first death in 12 years, not 22 - Ricardo Paletti at the 1982 Canadian Grand Prix. I didn't see Roland's death, but it was shocking when I heard about it - I hadn't lived through the dangerous years and really believed this was a safe sport. Thankfully changes were made and the safety record is now exemplary, and so much of it found in road cars too. Roland clearly wasn't the most gifted driver, but he had determination and self-belief, and was seemingly a really nice guy too. There's a lovely tribute to him on the F1 Rejects website that's worth looking up as well. Interesting to note that Sam Brabham is now a racer himself, having first attended a GP while in the womb.

F1 » Maldonado penalised for Gutierrez clash

Maybe it's surprising that this doesn't happen more often, considering the limited visibility of a driver when a car exiting the pits comes alongside, but is it really a coincidence that it wasn't Hamilton or Alonso who caused this? His oil-rich background and surly attitude make him even harder to like, but it's such a shame to see someone wasting what should be a great seat. Can I be forgiven for feeling schadenfreude at Lotus' decline and Williams' parallel progress this year?
