F1 » Massa blasts Verstappen for ‘dangerous’ crash

I am no great fan of Felippe, but to be fair to him I think he makes a valid point that if Max had been seriously injured, then a lot of questions would have been asked about whether it is reasonable to expose a 17 year old to the F1 cauldron, where judgment and experience are needed to make the necessary split second decisions that are required. Can you really blame a 17 year old if he gets it horribly wrong?

F1 » Raikkonen expected Ricciardo penalty

As I quoted on the Ricciardo thread, Kimi should remind himself of why he is in F1 in the first place by recalling what Ayrton said: 'if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver because we are competing, we are competing to win. And the main motivation to all of us is to compete for victory, it's not to come 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th. I race to win as long as I feel it's possible. Sometimes you get it wrong, sure, it's impossible to get it right all the time. But I race designed to win, as long as I feel I'm doing it right." Once upon a time we saw Kimi make these moves, that was why he excited us. Even if Ricciardo got it wrong, thank goodness he was prepared to give it a go.

F1 » Ricciardo: I think the fans enjoyed Kimi pass

Let's remind ourselves of those great words of Ayrton Senna before grizzling every time someone takes a chance on a pass: 'if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver because we are competing, we are competing to win. And the main motivation to all of us is to compete for victory, it's not to come 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th. I race to win as long as I feel it's possible. Sometimes you get it wrong, sure, it's impossible to get it right all the time. But I race designed to win, as long as I feel I'm doing it right.'

F1 » Massa blasts Verstappen for ‘dangerous’ crash

Oli, I accept your points. I also think Max is an outstanding talent. I am just grappling with the thought that until he reaches the age of majority it is difficult to know what level of responsibility and personal accountability you can place on his shoulders if and when things go wrong. Unlike F1, in the various feeder series there is an acceptance that you have young and inexperienced drivers. However, in F1 every driver is expected to be personally accountable for any failure to exercise the skills and judgment expected of a driver at the highest level of the sport.
