Trying hard is irrelevant. This is racing and results are what count. Rossi built his reputation on results. If he hadn't won so much, there wouldn't be so many people who follow him now. However, he is not the best out there now and becoming a mid-pack rider must be tough on the ego for a guy who used to be the best. Some of his more ardent fans need to accept that the baton has passed and stop carrying on like he should be winning every race by right. As far as respect goes, how much respect did he show to mid-pack or lesser riders when he was the boss?

Why is it the the usual crew of Stoner haters find it so hard to accept that he is the only person to have the skills required to ride the CF Ducati, with it's inherent design flaws, for wins/podiums on a regular basis. They try to make out it is somehow CS's fault that Rossi did not have the skills required to do the same thing. The fact is CS has consistently demonstrated he can outperform Rossi on a head to head basis. I think this is what really upsets those who want to believe no one can be better than Rossi. Even Rossi himself admits the best he can do this year is ride for third. Surely the best rider would be the aiming to win the championship?

The more relevant evidence for current and future performance is the whole of last season. Let's not forget that Stoner was .5 sec ahead after the first test even though he missed a day, which suggests the actual gap could have been larger as the general trend was for the riders to improve their times on each of the three days. Lorenzo, Stoner and Pedrosa all have tracks that they are the dominant rider at. The championship will be decided by who does the best at the 'away' tracks and those tracks where none of the three have a clear advantage.
