F1 » Button: The FIA did a really good job

The race could have been run two hours earlier to avoid the worst of the weather. Recovery vehicles could be modified to make them less dangerous during a collision. A safety car could have been deployed during the recovery of Sutil's car. I'm not blaming the FiA for any of the above not being done but in doing any of the above Jules would probably be perfectly well right now so it's worth thinking about what went wrong to prevent a recurrence.

F1 » Bianchi 'critical but stable' after crash

WYNK: The only thing to be glad of is that the heavy lifter hadn't started its backward movement a second before it did or we would certainly be talking about a fatality.
WYNK, It may well have been better for Jules if it had moved backwards, having a head on collision with the recovery vehicles wheel may have been far safer than going under the back of the lifter.

Richard, I've just seen an extended version of that video (2 mins 43 secs GP Today) , for the first minute during the recovery of Sutil's car the marshal waves double yellows then switches to the green flag, Jules hits the recovery vehicle 12 seconds after the change to green flag. So am I to believe that the first minute of the recovery merited waved yellows but subsequent minutes didn't? And after seeing the extended video I take back my earlier idea that the angle of the film may have given a false idea of the location of the green flag, it didn't it was right on top of the incident and shouldn't have been there. I am not blaming the marshal for causing Jules' crash, but the green flag should not have been shown at that time, in that location in my opinion.

richard: ty, i thought that YOU would have more knowledge of the flags! the incident took place BETWEEN post 11 and post 12, so that is the area that was subject to double yellows. post 12 was correctly indicating that the area between post 12 and post 13 was open to racing. yes, it is confusing to those who do not know the flags, but to try and apportion blame to marshals that were doing their job, is totally unfair.
Richard I'm fully aware of the flags meanings and a green flag means end of hazard or safe racing conditions. And from that footage the green flag looks to be right on top of the incident, not after it. As I said perhaps it's just the angle it was filmed from. And don't SHOUT at me or I'll SHOUT back! :p

richard: the use of green flag for the track ahead was totally in order. it was just chance that the marshals post was immediately past the pont of accident. had it been 100 m further on, nobody ould even mention it.
Richard nobody would have mentioned it if it had been 100yds further on because it would have been well away from the incident. From that footage (and possible it is just the angle it's filmed from) it looks like the green flag is right behind the recovery operation.
