I disagree. I believe it's something that Rossi started to distract the rider behind him into looking at his leg instead of looking at the apex. Other riders believe it benefits their riding but I bet when Rossi retires, he will say it was a distraction technique. After doing the California Superbike School, I found that 'clamping your legs to the tank' under braking makes the bike feel much more stable than with your knee out.
