@tomcol Barbera often the quickest Ducati rider? Never the the quickest Ducati rider. There, fixed it for you. This is racing. The occasional fastest lap is not the same as being "often the quickest". Racing is about crossing the line before your oponents. When the flag drops absolutely nothing else matters. So how often this season has Barbera been the first Ducati past the chequered flag? Frequently? Often? Ocassionally? Rarely? No, never. And those fast qualifying laps? We all know how he got them.

MotoGP » Ben Spies, Iannone secure 2013 MotoGP seats

It's weird, it really is. When Spies first came to the class plenty of people were talking as if he was the new alien. Listen back to the TV commentaries of the time for an example. Here we are almost three years on and it's pretty clear that he's just not in that league. Now I'm not saying he's rubbish, far from it, but he doesn't have the raw talent to be a frequent race winner and certainly not a champion. Generally speaking to be champion you need to be sitting on the podium at almost every race and challenging for the win in most of the races that you don't actually win. In his time in the class I see no evidence that Ben has that capability. So the question is, why are so many people still talking about him as if he is an alien?

@Antony Perry Suzuki, Kawasaki and Aprilia all chose to walk. It's not up to Dorna to bring them back it's up to them to come back. After all Suzuki's posturing coming back will involve a certain amount of egg on their face. They clearly expected Dorna to beg them to stay and give them concessions to do so. As for BMW they have stated on several occasions that they will not even consider entering MotoGP until after they have won WSB. As such you are unlikely to see them in MotoGP without a full season's gap between winning WSB and entering MotoGP. So even if they win this year they won't be entering MotoGP until at least 2014. And if you go beyond that date then I suspect they are likely to hang back until Moto1 launches in 2017.

What puzzles me is why Yamaha bothered negotiating with Ben for next year at all. It was probably only down to that famed Japanese code of honour and loyalty that they even did him the courtesy of mentioning the possibility of a ride for 2013 at all. Or maybe they just worked on the principal that a rider who thinks he has a chance of the ride for next year will perform better than one who knows he hasn't. As such maybe they wanted to see if a sense of security (false or not) would give him the confidence to win. Clearly it did not.

@Hope Against Hope. In what way have Yamaha treated Spies in an underhand manner? His contract was up at the end of the year. Yamaha had every right to sign whoever they could negotiate a deal with. Yes they were talking to Ben. They were also talking to Rossi and others too. It's the way the game is played. Ben knows it and so does everybody else. The only person who doesn't seem to know it is you. And Ben hasn't been dumped after performing well. He's been dropped after performing very badly. Bad luck notwithstanding he is behind several riders on inferior machines on a machine that is a proven race winner. He didn't do well last year either. He's getting towards the end of his second year on a factory bike. He should have been posting regular podiums this year. He hasn't. He doesn't deserve a factory ride. BTW I consider all four Ducatis as equivalent to satellite bikes, there are only four factory seats in 2012 and I doubt that will change much in 2013.

The thing that strikes me as odd about many of the above comments is the way the commentards assume Ben had a whole lot of choice. "Why didn't he go to BMW/Gresini/Whoever?" Has it occurred to any of you that maybe they didn't want him? Or maybe that they did, but only on their terms - IOW he couldn't do a deal? This doesn't just apply to Spies, but to many other stories on other riders and other teams. We've heard it many times when a rider signs for a new team. And the other way round when a team needs a new or substitute rider. "Why didn't they sign Mr X?" Well maybe he didn't want the ride, or wasn't available or wanted too much money. Why do so many people on this forum assume these things are simple black and white matters? That's what I'd like to know.

MotoGP » ‘Experimental’ Bridgestone tyres appear at Brno test

It's ironic that Bridgestone were the first tyre company to recognize that different road bikes require different tyre constructions. I think the Battlax was the first tyre available in the same size, but different constructions to suit different bike. The same company however thinks it perfectly reasonable that one tyre can suit a whole variety of race bikes. Look at the different loads that will be placed on tyres by the Yamaha, Ducati and Honda, let alone the CRTs. IRTA need to get mobilized and give the GPC hell over the tyres.
