F1 » Ricciardo: I'm not here to run around in tenth place

Of course they spoke to others but that does not mean DR was not No 1 on their list! What if Kimi said he would race for a lot smaller wage than expected? That might shuffle him to the No 1 position but they wouldn't know until the talked to him would they!!! I have negotiated IT contracts worth hundreds of millions and you always have a No 1 choice but good business says you give others a chance to change your mind. DR went in as No 1 choice and since nobody else provided a better overall package he got the drive.

On the Vergne deserves the seat more idea. Ricciardo thrashed him in the 2008 Formula Renault 2.0 West European Championship and the 2008 Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup series. He thrashed him again in the 2010 World Series by Renault 3.5 Championship. Daniel has won or come seconds in multiple international championships in open wheel cars. His CV is far more impressive than Vergne's.

F1 » Ricciardo: I'm not here to run around in tenth place

I will say it because I have not seen anything to suggest otherwise. DR will be as quick as Seb from the first practice session in the new car onwards. He will out qualify Seb in a few races during the year and, if the car is up to it, will win races. He showed his quality at the Young Drivers earlier in the year and is the best choice because he is marketable, enthusiastic and a team player who is also quick. Vergne has not been the better driver and has had far more DNF than Ricciardo. That ratio is 10 to 4 or similar. Ricciardo has finished ahead of Vergne more often and has shown his ability to make a good race from a poor starting position. There is nothing to remotely suggest Vergne deserved the ride more than Ricciardo.

MotoGP » Barry Sheene tribute at Silverstone MotoGP

RFS, statistics are not the way to determine the best racers. Have you flown around the world to watch GP racing? Have you lived in campervans for months at a time to follow the sport you love? Have you sat at the fence at Assen for 10 hours just to make sure you have your favorite spot to spectate from? I have done all these things and have followed the sport for over 40 years in rain hail or sunshine. You have probably sat down and watched on the TV and become an expert on riders you have never seen. When you actually follow the sport and watch the practice sessions and the racing that is not shown on the TV then you know who is trying on inferior machinery and whose talent is supreme. Sheene had talent by the bucket loads that any real fan could see.
