MotoGP » Bautista: We have a lot of work to do

The media machine demands comments from every rider after every session and tends to publish these comments as stories even if they are not really worthy. Sometimes they can even make it look like riders are being arrogant, when they're not. The comments from Dovi and Bautista are classic examples. Here we have two riders separated by less than a fifth of a second. Both citing setup problems, one front one rear, and saying that with those issues sorted they could go faster. Taken in isolation you could believe either of them. Taken together you realise the picture is more complex. What if they both sort their issues and go faster? What if only one of them does? What if neither does? What if everybody else goes faster? What if somebody wrote a proper insightful piece rather than just regurgitating press releases as individual "stories"?

MotoGP » Moto2: Friday advantage to Espargaro in Australia

Interesting that all but two of the top six set their fastest lap in FP1. In other words confirmation, if such were needed, that as in most practice sessions they hadn't got their heads down and gone for their hottest lap. When a practice session is cut short the results tend to be misleading. Don't expect Pol to come out of FP3 or QP with a similar advantage.

MotoGP » Stoner 'on another level' says Lorenzo

"Jorge Lorenzo intends to wrap up the MotoGP world title at Phillip Island on Sunday by finishing ahead of chief rival Dani Pedrosa." Where in Jorge's comments does it say he "intends" to do as you say? Sure he'd like to do that. Indeed he'll be trying to beat Dani. However as you said in an earlier story he knows he doesn't have to try too hard and take risks. To beat Dani is, if you like, on his "desirable" list rather than his "mandatory" list. I see nowhere in his comments that even suggests he "intends" to wrap up the title this weekend.

MotoGP » Ill Crutchlow feels strain at Phillip Island

Brochitis is a real ****** when you're riding. Not only does it sap your strength like many ilnesses do, there is also the coughing to contend with. Coughing while you're trying to do anything physical is detremental to that activity, but at speed on a motorcycle it can put you on your ****. To compound the problem most drugs that suppress the cough reflex have unwelcome side effects of the "do not operate heavy machinery" variety.

MotoGP » Rossi eighth, striving for further progress

@DB8 Rossi's MO for practicing has always been to work on his race pace. Sometimes (not always) other riders take some time in practice looking for a qualifying setup. Which would go a long way to explaining why Rossi can, come race day, run with riders who practice would suggest are significantly faster. Rossi even uses qualifying to work on his race pace. Back when he was winning races he would often leave it until the last few minutes of qualifying to stick on soft tyres and go out and put in a fast time. This year he has often not even bothered with trying to set a fast time with a soft tyre. Whether you believe this is because he can't get the Ducati to work on a soft tyre or he just can't be bothered to spend time working on a soft tyre setup is moot. The fact is that Rossi tends to be closer to his practice and qualifying times in the race than many other riders are.
