MotoGP » Lorenzo ‘never thought this would be possible’

[U can't say it was less talented riders behind the reason why Rossi won his championships. They were his qualified competitors at the time.] I agree with you that Rossi was the best rider during that era, but seriously take a look at the competition. It's my opinion the field was pretty mediocre compared to the current crop of riders we enjoy today. 03 Gibernau and Capirossi. What did Capirossi ever win in Moto GP, only one win that I can recall. 04 Tamada, Gibernau and Biaggi. Heck Edwards came 5th in the championship !!! which reflects the depth of the field. 05 Melandri and Hayden.Even worse Edwards came 4th!!! Where's the competition??? 06 Got beat by Hayden who's never won anything since. 07 Got beat by Stoner 10/18 wins on a bike Rossi could not ride! So yeah, all credit to Rossi for taking those championships back then but I don't think he could replicate such success if riders the quality of Lorenzo, Stoner, Marquez and Pedrosa had been around. Just my opinion.

Rossi had it easy early in his career getting a lot of championships riding the best bikes against a host of lesser riders, Tamada, Gibernau, Melandri, Hayden, Hopkins, Ukawa, Barros. Only Biaggi was any real competition and considered a top drawer Moto GP rider capable of regular wins. It's been a lot more difficult to hoist a championship since Lorenzo, Stoner, Marquez arrived on the scene. Just ask Pedrosa... 7 wins in 2012 against Lorenzo and Stoner who only got 6 and he still couldn't pull it off. Given his current form Lorenzo looks like he could just take the crown. On another topic...wouldn't it be cool if Stoner re-signed with Ducati.
