Yearby23: 99 came from the addition of the numbers 46+26+27...Jorge's fellow aliens at the time. He did let his fans choose but the options were 23, 48, 87 or 99.
Haha, really? That's interesting, didn't know that... So today his number should be 165 then (46+26+93 :-) )... But I don't know if MotoGP rules allow numbers above 99. It is allowed in WSBK though, remember the riders like Aaron Slight, Ruben Xaus (both #111), John Hopkins (#121) or Ben Bostrom (#155).
