Mayfield sells Cup team to Carter

Owner John Carter has told NASCAR.com that he has acquired the assets of Jeremy Mayfield's Sprint Cup operation, and will field the #08 car in Sunday's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard with two-time Cup champion Terry Labonte behind the wheel.

The plan is to race the #08 the remainder of the season, with Boris Said set to pedal on road courses. Mayfield is suspended from NASCAR because of a failed drug test, and Labonte hasn't been in action since a largely anonymous appearance in the season-opener at Daytona. Carter, meanwhile, entered Said in the 500, but failed to see his car make it into the race on either speed or through its qualifying race.

“We needed some good equipment, and Jeremy needed to sell because of his problems with NASCAR,” Carter explained, “It was a package deal. We got cars, haulers and equipment.”
