Bobby Labonte made an all too rare trip to victory lane in Saturday's Aaron's 312 Busch Series race at the Talladega Superspeedway, passing his former Cup Series teammate Tony Stewart in the final moments of a typically spectacular Talladega race.
Labonte and Stewart, both driving for Kevin Harvick's emerging team, traded places in the last few yards of the 120 lap race with Labonte getting a superb 'side-draft' around the outside of Stewart as the two raced through the tri-oval.
Behind them, Casey Mears survived a near-miss earlier in the day when Stewart bumped his Hendrick teammate Kyle Busch into the side of the #24 Chevrolet to take third place although Busch was not as fortunate, barrel-rolling into retirement thankfully without injury.
Busch Series rookies David Ragan and Kyle Krisiloff rounded out the top five with Harvick a very happy sixth. Juan Montoya was a most impressive seventh in the best of the Dodge's with Ward Burton, polesitter Brad Coleman and current championship leader Carl Edwards rounding out the top ten.
While Busch's accident was the most spectacular of the afternoon, no less than 13 of the 42 starters failed to finish after several multi-car pileups although it was a problem with the transmission that sidelined Dale Earnhardt Jr on lap 92 whilst he was in a race winning position.
Despite suffering his worst finish of the season, Edwards keeps his astonishing championship lead, as Dave Blaney was one of the drivers who failed to finish. Harvick now moves up to second in points, 433 behind Edwards with Blaney dropping back to third, 496 points behind Edwards.
