Jeff Gordon may have come up short in his bid for a fifth Cup Series title this year but his #24 Hendrick Motorsports pit crew can still call themselves champions after they won the season-long Checkers Drive-Through Pitstop Challenge.
At every points scoring race on the Nextel Cup schedule NASCAR and competition sponsors Checkers/Rally's monitor the amount of time spent by each team on pit road from the moment they cross the speed limit line on the entrance to pit lane to the moment they pass the line at pit exit. At the end of each race, the car with the least amount of time on pit road is declared the winner.
A weekly prize of $11,000 is awarded to each winning pit crew with the team with the most individual victories declared the overall winner at the end of the year. With four weekly wins Gordon's #24 crew ended the season tied with the #01 DEI/Ginn Racing team of Mark Martin, Regan Smith and Aric Almirola but they took the title by finishing higher in the Nextel Cup points standings.
In addition to the title of pit stop Kings for 2007 Gordon's #24 pit crew win $111,150 in bonus prize money.
The #24 crew consists of: Jeff Cook (jackman), Mike "Tiny" Houston (front-tyre carrier), Clay Robinson (front-tyre changer), Jeff Knight (rear-tyre carrier), Kevin Gilman (rear-tyre changer), Caleb Hurd (gasman), Jamie Frady (catch can) and Andy Kruep (eighth-man). The pit crew coach is Matt Clark.
