Chevrolet clinches manufacturers' crown

Chevrolet has taken its 32nd manufacturers title in the NASCAR Sprint Cup following victory for Jimmie Johnson in the penultimate race of the 2008 season.

Johnson's victory, his seventh of the season, means he now needs to finish only 36th in this weekend's season finale to secure the Sprint Cup crown for a third straight season after main rival Carl Edwards could finish only fourth.

The Hendrick Motorsport man dominated the event, leading on three occasions for a total of 217 laps, while Dale Earnhardt Jr, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton also finished inside the top ten for Chevrolet.

"On behalf of the men and women at General Motors, it is an honour for Chevrolet to clinch our 32nd NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Manufacturers' Cup title," Terry Dolan, manager of Chevy Racing said. "It is a proud achievement based on a come-back run for the title given the tough competition we face every week on and off the race track.

"This championship has been earned through the perseverance and dedication of Team Chevy's drivers, owners and crews with the collaboration of our GM Racing engineers.

"We look forward to carrying the momentum of achievement in to the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup season."
