Pole sitter Kyle Busch finished thirty-sixth on Saturday night at Phoenix, completing 259 laps of the 312. He received two penalties, which didn't improve his humour and after the race he was hard to find. Most of the media had to settle for his Crew Chief, ALAN GUSTAFSON, apologising on behalf of young Kyle who misbehaved in the heat of the moment.
Kyle Busch got a speeding ticket for excess speed in the pit lane after pitting while battling for the lead with Greg Biffle. That cost him. Then he was caught up in the red flag carnage on lap 99, which cost him pit time for repairs.
He was later penalised five laps for intentionally hitting Casey Mears in pit lane as pay back for spinning him into the wall. After the race, Kyle Busch was invited to the NASCAR trailer for a meeting.
“I'm devastated,” said Busch. “We had a pole-winning car and were three times faster than everyone else in the field. We were penalised for speeding on pit road. But last year we came back from two laps down to win the race, so we were confident we were going to get back up there. These guys on the Kellogg's/Carquest team really worked hard and gave me a great car and solid pit stops. I'm harder on myself than anyone. I'm a competitor and I take this seriously. It was just a devastating day.”
