Villeneuve misses out on Sprint Cup return

6 August 2009

Former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve has missed out on the chance to return to the NASCAR Sprint Cup after Reed Sorenson was passed fit to compete this weekend at Watkins Glen.

Sorenson's participation in the event was in doubt after he inhaled carbon monoxide during Monday's delayed race at Pocono, with the Richard Petty Motorsports team contacting Villeneuve to see if he would be able to replace Sorenson if not passed fit to race the #43 Dodge.

However, with Sorenson declared fit to race, Villeneuve will not now make a return with the team thanking the Canadian for placing himself on stand-by in case needed.

“Reed Sorenson will drive the #43 Dodge for Richard Petty Motorsports in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International,” a statement issued by the team said. “The Petty team retained Jacques Villeneuve as a substitute driver in case Sorenson continued to suffer from the effects of carbon monoxide he inhaled in Monday's race at Pocono.

“Fortunately, Sorenson has recovered from the accident. Owners George and Foster Gillett along with the Richard Petty Motorsports team appreciate Villeneuve's willingness to help out on such short notice.”
