Next up in the Sprint Cup series is the Subway Fresh Fit 600 at the Phoenix International Raceway in Phoenix Arizona USA. This event historically provides great racing and this year promises to be no different.
The flat Phoenix tri-oval is unique in the series for its shape, length, and low banking. The one mile tri-oval is known for its tire killing surface and with its variable low banking the racing is tough and tight.
Banking varies throughout the track with 11° in turns 1-2, 9° in turns 3-4, 3° on the frontstretch and 9° on the backstretch. Crew chiefs have a tough job setting up the cars to be consistent in every portion of the track.
Equally important in this race is how drivers manage to finish. That's because Phoenix has a way of being a milestone for race teams when it comes to the Sprint Cup chase.
Phoenix is the seventh race in the season and by the time the checkered flag falls, performance trends by each team will be evident and teams that are relatively low in the standings traditionally have a very difficult struggle getting back into contention.
That's not to say the season is over for teams outside of the top twelve, but historically it becomes very big mountain to climb for most teams if they are not at least in the top 18 going into the next race (Texas).
