Sprint Cup teams will start the Coke Zero 400 weekend at Daytona International Speedway using restrictor plates with holes 1-1/32nd of an inch in diameter, 3/64ths of an inch bigger than the plates used in the Daytona 500 in February, when the Cup cars still had rear wings.

NASCAR replaced the wing with a rear spoiler in March.

The bigger the holes, the more air that flows through the engine and the more horsepower generated.

"We think this will be a needed boost due to the additional drag we've picked up since switching from a rear wing to a rear spoiler," NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said Monday.

NASCAR can change the size of the restrictor plate up until race time.

"I think a bigger plate is a good change," said David Reutimann, who finished fifth in the 500. "I know that NASCAR has put a lot of thought into that stuff. We are talking about very, very small changes. We're not talking about going from one inch to two inch.

"Anytime the plate gets bigger the horsepower goes up--and I'm a fan of that. With the new configuration of the spoiler on the back I think it's a good fit for what we're trying to do."
