Joey Logano set the fastest time in qualifying on Saturday, benefiting from a brief break in the cloud cover that threatened rain for most of the session to give him a glimmer of sunlight that possibly meant the difference between pole and second.

It's Logano's third Cup pole position in 96 starts and his second this year following success on the road course at Infineon. It's his first pole position at Pocono, his best starting position before this weekend having been 12th place, and makes him the youngest driver to claim pole here.

Logano's time of 52.309s on the 2.5 mile unique "tri-oval" circuit was just 0.124s ahead of Kasey Kahne, who had topped the timesheets in the second practice on Friday. It continues a strong run for Kahne, having started in the top ten in the last four races.

"Joey put down a great lap," said Kahne said. "Ours was good, but Joey's was really good. If we want the pole, we'll have to be a little bit faster, but still, it's a nice spot for Sunday. So many things will happen on Sunday. We watched last week at Indy how it all changed throughout probably the last 40 laps."

Six of the past 12 Pocono races were won from the front row, but they can't rest too easy - Carl Edwards has won this race starting as far back as 29th in the past.

They will start on the front row with Martin Truex Jr and championship leader Edwards in third and fourth place respectively. Brad Keselowski managed to qualify in 13th place despite still carrying injuries from his high speed crash in testing at Road Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon that saw him hospitalised.

Jeff Gordon will start from a disappointing 31st place after scraping the wall at turn 2 during his run. The #24 will need a little overnight bodywork repair before the start of the Good Sam RV Insurance 500 race at 1pm ET on Sunday afternoon.

Geoffrey Bodine, TJ Bell and Mike Skinner failed to qualify for the 43-car grid.
