Reports suggest Busch may oust Allmendinger

14 December 2011

Speculation over the future of Kurt Busch, who parted company with Penske Racing at the start of the month, has linked him to a seat at Richard Petty Motorsports - at the expense of incumbent driver AJ Allmendinger.

The Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody programme on the Sirius XM NASCAR Radio digital station in the US reported that team boss Richard Petty had made the proposal to sign free agent Busch in order to attempt to persuade corporate sponsor Best Buy to re-sign with the team.

"I can tell you there is a lot of interest on our part in having Kurt Busch in the fold," conceded RPM Chief Operating Officer Robbie Loomis. "It makes sense to have Kurt with our team, if we can make it work."

Admitting that "nothing has excited me more than when I heard Kurt had become available," Loomis added: "I would mortgage my house to make Kurt a part of this team."

There is further speculation that RPM may attempt to expand to a three-car line-up in 2012 to accommodate adding Busch and avoid having to release Allmendinger, who just had his best season at Cup level to date, but this would depend on not only Best Buy staying with the team but additional sponsors coming on board.

There was no official statement from RPM on the speculation.
