Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin set the fastest times on the first day of 2013 testing at Daytona International Speedway, as teams start to get to grips with the new Gen-6 car.
JGR drivers top first Daytona test day
Joe Gibbs Racing team mates Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin topped the timesheets in the morning and afternoon sessions respectively of the first day of pre-season testing at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday.

Kenseth, the newest JGR recruit after his switch from Roush Fenway at the end of 2012, set the pace in the morning session with a time of 46.691s (192.757mph) which was five-thousandths of a second faster than Marcos Ambrose who took second spot for Richard Petty Motorsports.

Kenseth was edged into second spot in the afternoon sessions by his new teammate Denny Hamlin by 0.077s, after Hamlin posted a time of 45.986s (195.712mph) as teams used the end of the session for drafting practice in the new Gen-6 model cars that will make their Cup début at next month's Daytona 500.

The remaining member of the JGR line-up, Kyle Busch, was in third place while veteran driver Mark Martin made it a Toyota lockout in the afternoon by putting the #55 Michael Waltrip Racing car into fourth place. In total, 34 drivers took the opportunity to have a full day of track time.

Danica Patrick bounced back from an early drive-train issue at the start of the morning session to post the third fastest time before lunch, and was seventh fastest in the afternoon. Patrick confirmed that as well as her maiden full-time Cup season, she's also in discussions with Turner Scott Motorports to run ten Nationwide races. Patrick added that she would definitely not be considering a run in the IndyCar Indianapolis 500 in 2013.

In other news, it was confirmed that Michael Waltrip will drive in the Daytona 500 for new team Swan Racing in the #30 car in place of David Stremme, who will front the team's campaign for the majority of 2013.
