Cup driver arrested on assault charges
10 October 2013
Local police confirmed on Wednesday that NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Travis Kvapil had been arrested at his home in Mooresville, North Caroline and subsequently charged with assault on a female - understood to be his wife, Jennifer - and false imprisonment.
Police were responding to a 911 call from Kvapil's residence that stated an assault was taking place. The officers determined there was sufficient probable cause to believe that a domestic assault had occurred, and Kvapil was arrested at 7:11pm ET. No further details were provided.
The 37-year-old was taken to the Iredell County Jail and held overnight. He was charged in the morning on misdemeanour offences, and freed on a $1000 unsecured bond after a scheduled court appearance, according to police records.
It was subsequently confirmed that the 37-year-old will continue to race in this weekend's Bank of America 500 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday night.
"BK Racing understands the severity of the situation and we don't condone the actions that Travis has been accused of," commented Ron Devine, co-owner of BK Racing. "We feel it's important to let the system take its course. For that reason, we have elected to support Travis and his family and keep Travis in the car for this weekend's race. Further comment will be available as additional information becomes available."
"NASCAR does not condone the actions with which Travis Kvapil has been charged and we are disappointed to learn of this incident," added a statement from Kerry Tharp, NASCAR spokesman. "We have been in close communication with the race team and are in the process of gathering as much information as possible.
"NASCAR takes this matter very seriously and will continue to monitor the situation as it moves forward," the statement added.
Kvapil is currently 31st in the Sprint Cup Series point standings driving the #93 car, with a season best 16th place finish coming at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 24. Kvapil has competed in the Sprint Cup Series in 240 starts over the course of nine seasons, but has yet to record a win.
Kvapil was the 2003 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion and won nine races competing in that series full time from 2001-2004 and again in 2007.
