Season summary:

Every time it looks as though he might be getting past his prime, the old four-time magic kicks in and Jeff Gordon springs back to life. He picked up a couple of autumn poles (at Richmond and Charlotte) and won at Martinsville as one of 17 top tens and an average finish of 14.4. Even so it looked as though Gordon would miss out on the Chase, until the fuss over race rigging at Richmond led to NASCAR adding him as an unprecedented 13th contender - a bit of largesse that Gordon wasn't thrilled about, believing with some justification that he'd done enough to deserve a proper place in the classic dozen without such sops.
