Jeff Burton broke a 175-race victory drought in Sunday's Dover 400 after a stirring battle with Matt Kenseth at 'The Monster Mile.'
Burton's win, which came after he and Kenseth battled side by side for nearly 20 laps before Burton's decisive lap 394 pass for the lead, was his first since Phoenix in October 2001 and his Richard Childress Racing team's third in a row.
In addition to taking his first trip to victory lane in nearly five years, Burton also climbs to the top of the points standings after long-time leader Kenseth ran out of fuel with two laps to go and fell from second to tenth.
Kenseth looked set to take the points lead after leading more than half of the 200 laps and seeing Kevin Harvick, who led coming into this round, blow an engine with 30 laps to go and finish 32nd.
But Kenseth's late bobble allowed Burton to move to the top of the championship on a day where at least two of the ten Chase contenders saw their title hopes evaporate.
Jeff Gordon finished third, behind Carl Edwards, and moves into second place in the standings six points behind Burton. Only two other Chase contenders finished in the top ten as the Monster Mile lived up to its name. Denny Hamlin took ninth and stays fourth in points while Kenseth's tenth place finish keeps him in third spot.
Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin finished 13th and 14th, Dale Earnhardt Jr 21st after a puncture while Harvick's 32nd place finish drops him to fourth in the standings.
But there will be no championship party this year for Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne, who both failed to finish and were classified 38th and 40th respectively. Kahne is now more than 180 points behind Burton with Busch more than 220 back with eight races remaining.
