Gordon claims Infineon win

25 June 2006

Jeff Gordon cruised to his ninth career Nextel Cup road course victory with a dominant display in Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350 at the Infineon Raceway in California.

The four-times Cup Champion crossed the line comfortably ahead of Ryan Newman with Terry Labonte a surprise third for Hall of Fame Racing after he gambled successfully on fuel mileage to secure the #96 teams' best result of the year to date.

Greg Biffle and polesitter Kurt Busch rounded out the top five with Carl Edwards, Jeff Burton, Elliott Sadler, Boris Said and Jimmie Johnson rounding out the top ten.

As usual there were plenty of bumps and scrapes including two crashes that were worthy of a red flag. The first, on the opening lap saw Ken Schrader, Sterling Marlin and Tom Hubert all eliminated while the second stoppage, which came with just five laps remaining, claimed JJ Yeley, Dale Jarrett and Bobby Labonte.

Boris Said aside it was a tough day for the road course specialists with Scott Pruett finishing 25th, David Gilliland 32nd, PJ Jones 36th, Ron Fellows 37th and Robby Gordon 40th.
