In a split second decision, Matt Kenseth made the call to come into the pits under the final caution of the night but to go for only two tyres. It was the difference that gave him both track position and enough raw pace to see off the day's long-time leaders Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards for the win.

"That was all Matt there," said Kenseth's crew chief Jimmy Fennig, who said the call wasn't made until the #17 was literally in the box. "He figured we needed to have clean air and he called two tires and we did two and away we went."

Kenseth still had to beat wily old veteran campaigner Mark Martin (who had declined to pit at all) away at the green flag, but once he did he was in the lead all the way to the chequered - all but one of his 33 laps led at the Monster Mile came from that final run.

Martin held on to second ahead of Marcos Ambrose and Kyle Busch, while the race leader before the caution, Clint Bowyer, together with Edwards and Johnson found that they were unable to work their way though traffic as expected and remained stuck in sixth, seventh and ninth respectively.

The night's six cautions were supplied by a competition caution and a brief shower; a spin by Joey Logano; debris; and accidents into the Monster Mile wall by Juan Montoya and Kasey Kahne.

Kenseth's victory in the FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks event at Dover International Speedway - the second in five races - puts him in the elite club of drivers to have won two victories so far this season alongside Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch. It's Kenseth's 20th Sprint Cup career victory in 411 starts, and puts him up four places in the Sprint Cup standings to sixth. Mark Martin is inside the Chase in 11th thanks to his runners-up position.
