Cup - Charlotte - Race results

30 May 2011

Kevin Harvick barely featured in the Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but rather like Dan Wheldon in the Indianapolis 500 he led the one lap that mattered - the final one that comes complete with a chequered flag accessory. It makes Harvick the only driver to take three victories in 2011, and is his 17th career win in 370 starts.

Seconds earlier it seemed that Dale Earnhardt Jr. was about to delight his legions of followers by finally breaking that 104-race drought with victory, only to run out of gas half a mile from the finish line.

"I'm disappointed we didn't win. I know all our fans were disappointed to come so close," said Junior, who had known all along that the fuel gambit was a big stretch. "We were a top-five car [but] we weren't supposed to win," Earnhardt admitted. "We played our hand, and those other guys came in. I tried to save a ton of gas, but I know I didn't save enough. I tried to save as much as I could."

A three-car accident right on lap 302 when Mark Martin and David Gilliland tangled and collected the unfortunate Ryan Newman, who was forced into the garage for repairs and returned 40 laps down minus his front engine cover.

Kyle Busch led 55 laps and ran in the top ten for much of the race only to fall victim to two late-race spins that saw him finish a very disappointing 32nd. “We know he gives us 100 percent and he doesn't ever leave anything on the table," said cJoe Gibbs Racing crew chief Dave Rogers. "Tonight he just tried to take a little bit too much and it got away from him. That's part of racing. That's why we love Kyle Busch – he only knows one speed – full throttle."

Busch drops down two places in the Sprint Cup standings as a result of his poor result, while Kevin Harvick jumps up three spots to dislodge Jimmie Johnson from the runner-up position behind championship leader Carl Edwards, who had a mediocre finish in Sunday night's race.
