Cup - Kansas - Race results

5 June 2011

Brad Keselowski had to stretch his final tank of fuel an incredible 57 laps to make it all the way to the chequered flag and claim his second career Cup win in 66 starts, at the STP 400 at Kansas Speedway.

It's his first victory of 2011 and his first with Penske.

"I want that flag! I want that flag! Hell yeah!" he said over the radio post-race. "I knew we could do it. Awesome job!"

Keselowski's Penske team mate Kurt Busch had dominated much of the race after starting from pole position and led for over half the laps - 152 of the race total of 267 - but was thwarted by the need for a late pit stop for fuel while Keselowski dared to stay out. He ended up dropping to ninth by the end of the race.

For the second week running, fan favourite Dale Earnhardt Jr. was consigned to second place and now has a 106 race run without a victory despite multiple near-misses in 2011. He spun mid-race to being out a caution but kept it off the wall and was able to rejoin the race.

"We shouldn't have run second again. We've got to fix some things. We've got fast cars so we can be fast," he said after the race, adding that the biggest problem was the starting position. "Just started way back there in the back, man. We ain't qualified no better than 22nd besides Daytona and Talladega. We need to fix that somehow.

"I spun out there that one time trying to find some speed," he continued. "Just trying to get a little too much there and lost track position. We had a good car though, it was fast all day."

Denny Hamlin came third on his 200th Cup start, marking his second top-five finish of the season.

The race saw five cautions in total, three for debris, one for Earnhardt's spin and another on lap 119 for Landon Cassill hitting the wall hard after contact from behind from Marcos Ambrose. Kyle Busch also hit the wall shortly after the first round of pit stops and radioed to the pit crew that he had "killed" the car - but still went on to finish in 12th just behind his Richard Childress Racing arch-rival Kevin Harvick.
