Cup - Infineon - Race results

Kurt Busch emerged as the surprise winner at Infineon Raceway, surviving what at times was an explosively ill-tempered race unfolding around him to record his first-ever road course victory.
Kurt Busch won the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway at Sears Point in Sonoma, California, his first win of the Cup season and his first ever victory on a road course. There was also some irony in the fact that Busch couldn't win any of the last three races in which he started from pole, but could dominate a race for which he qualified in 11th position.

Nor was it a fluke, although staying out on track during the final caution and opting not to pit did finally prove the decisive moment; but that shouldn't eclipse the fact that he led for 75 of the 110 laps and finished the race with a comfortable margin over second-placed Jeff Gordon.

Carl Edwards increased his lead in the Sprint Cup points standings with an impressive third place, meaning that his decision to pull out of the Nationwide race at Road America to concentrate on Infineon proved to be a good call, especially as his car in that race expired early with engine problems. "I'm glad I stuck around for practice," Edwards said after the race.

But the race was dominated by a feud that broke out between Brian Vickers and Tony Stewart that started on lap 37 when Stewart barged Vickers off at turn 11, sparking a seven-car chain-reaction crash that ended Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s race early. Vickers vowed revenge and dumped Stewart off at the same spot on lap 87. Stewart said afterwards that "I probably had it coming, because I dumped him earlier, but I dumped him because he was blocking."

Other feuds developing after the race included Juan Montoya versus Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne fuming at Montoya in return, and Joey Logano furious with Robby Gordon.

Jeff Gordon summed it up best: "Man, it was nuts out there."
