Cup - Atlanta - Race results

6 September 2011

Jeff Gordon saw off a fierce challenge from his Hendrick Motorsports team mate Jimmie Johnson to become only the third driver in NASCAR history to claim 85 Cup victories in his career.

In a race already delayed by 38 hours from its originally scheduled start-time due to severe weather around Atlanta Motor Speedway, the AdvoCare 500 Cup race was further interrupted on multiple occasions by mist and rainfall before delivering a spectacular finale as Gordon and Johnson fought it out to the finish line.

Two more former Cup champions, Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch, finished in third and fourth place.

In the Chase, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon are now 'upgraded' to make the post-season shoot-out based on definite top ten finishes rather than wildcar fall-backs, and are joined by Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman who clinched places with their results at Atlanta. Brad Keselowski is now also locked in but may still have to rely on a wildcard place as Tony Stewart's third place dramatically improved his safety margin in the championship. Dale Earnhardt Jr. has yet to confirm his Chase place after finishing in 19th place at Atlanta.
