Cup - Richmond - Race results

11 September 2011

Kevin Harvick bounced back from an apparent recent slump in form to take the final win of the regular season at Richmond and put himself equal on points with Kyle Busch at the start of the Chase. He took the lead during a final round of pit stops under a yellow sparked by Harvick's Richard Childress Racing team mate Paul Menard going for a spin.

"I thought it was interesting when I saw a Childress car sitting down in the grass," said Jeff Gordon wryly, who had been leading when the yellow came out.

The "Wonderful Pistachios 400" - which proved remarkably tense and dramatic, and featured a massive pile-up on lap 8 of 400 - delivered Harvick his 18th Cup series victory in 348 starts and his fourth win of the 2011 season. It was his first top-five finish since the event at Pocono, 13 races back.

The race saw renewed hostilities between Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson that spilled out into the post-race period with Busch overheard allegedly muttering that Johnson was "a five time chump", and Busch then getting into angry exchanges with reporters in subsequent media interviews.

The race was the final one before the ten-race Chase play-off that will decide the 2011 Sprint Cup championship. The result confirms Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart have made it through, with Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin taking the two wildcards for the most wins, to join the eight drivers already in - Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman.
