Cup - Homestead - Qualifying times

Carl Edwards asserted his claim on the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship by taking pole for Sunday's season finale Ford 400 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Carl Edwards laid down his credentials for the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship at the first opportunity, by taking pole position for Sunday afternoon's Ford 400 season finale by 0.116s over Martin Truex Jr.

Edwards' only remaining rival for the title, Tony Stewart - who is just 3pts adrift of him in the standings - could only manage to qualify in 15th place for the crucial deciding race.

It's Edwards' third pole of 2011 and his tenth in 265 Cup races. It's his second pole on the 1.5-mile oval at Homestead-Miami, a track that he has a strong record on and which may give him the critical edge to win the championship.

Edwards also performed strongly in the two practice sessions held earlier on Saturday, after Cup activity at Homestead was washed-out on Friday by showers. He came top of the second practice session after running second to Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the first.
