Sprint Cup teams and drivers wrapped up their three days of pre-season testing at Daytona International Speedway, adjusting to still more rules and regulations tweaks introduced overnight by NASCAR who are still seeking to cut down on two-car tandem push/draft running.

The new settings reduced top speeds from the 206mph mark that they reached on Friday and brought them back closer to the 200mph point that is seen as desirable. In addition, the engine RPMs were down from the highs of 9500 seen yesterday to the more sustainable 9100 level.

NASCAR had changed the size of holes in restrictor-plate for the third day running, and also made the grille opening more horizontal, decreasing it from 63 square inches to 40 square inches. That meant that air couldn't get underneath the leading car to cool the pushing car, cutting the amount of time anyone could run in a tandem configuration. "It seems to have been very effective and as we continue to close the gap," said NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series director John Darby.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. spun the #88 while the cars while testing pack racing, after he was tapped by Juan Montoya. The #88 wasn't able to resume testing, so Earnhardt instead tried a few laps in the car of his Hendrick Motorsports team mate Jimmie Johnson for comparison.

Earnhardt's spin had collected Jeff Burton, who had also suffered a spin on Friday from a puncture caused by a sensor that had fellen off the car. "I don't know what happened, but maybe we're getting it out of the way now," said Burton of his bad luck. "Other than the obvious, we've had a really good test ... My car was really stable. My car drove really good and felt good. I was a little surprised. With the spoiler, I thought it might not feel that way."

Times for the January 12 test and January 13 test are also available.
