After two days off for good behaviour following the Budweiser Shootout and Daytona qualifying, the NASCAR Cup drivers were back in action action at Daytona International Speedway as they practised for Thursday's Gatorade Duel races and for Sunday's Daytona 500.

Matt Kenseth topped the first 90 minute practice of the day with a time of 44.809s (200.852 mph) just 0.008s faster than 2011 race winner Trevor Bayne.

Kenseth did not take part in the later session, which saw only 25 drivers take the opportunity to get out on track, and no one at all for the final 20 minutes. Aric Almirola set a time of 45.065s (199.712 mph) ahead of David Stremme who was 0.086s off the lead time.

Brad Keselowski spun during the early session while seeking to avoid Ryan Newman, which ended up with Clint Bowyer making rear contact and turning the Penske car onto the grass, but the team were able to make repairs.

Kasey Kahne was less fortunate when he was spun by contact with Juan Montoya in the later session, the slide through the grass causing significant left-front damage that will force him to a back-up car for the Duel. That means that he will have to start from the back of the field for Thursday afternoon's race, which decides the qualifying order for Sunday's Daytona 500 race.
