Having lost Saturday's Budweiser Shootout on the last turn of the race, Tony Stewart was in no mood to see history repeat itself in the first Gatorade Duel. He was aided by a slightly early finish to the race as the result of a caution caused by a hard smash for Danica Patrick after the white flag came out.

The more straightforward second Duel saw longtime leader Greg Biffle lose out to a determined late charge from Matt Kenseth who claimed the chequered flag ahead of Regan Smith thanks to a last-lap boost from Jimmie Johnson.

Michael McDowell and Robby Gordon qualified for the Daytona 500 from the first Duel, while Dave Blaney and Joe Nemechek were the fastest cars not already locked in to the starting grid to make it through from the second Duel.

Former Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip lost out on his chance to race on Sunday when he spun coming off pit road. David Gilliland, Juan Montoya and Paul Menard were all involved in a lap nine wreck and will have to take to their back-up cars for the Daytona 500 and start from the rear, as will Danica Patrick.
