Carl Edwards' time of 45.301s (198.671mph) was the fastest of the hour-long first morning practice session on a busy Friday at Daytona International Speedway, putting him a thousandth of a second faster than Aric Almirola. Only 16 of the 43 cars took part in the session

In the later hour-long practice session in the afternoon, Kyle Busch's time of 45.026s (199.885mph) was a dead heat with his Joe Gibbs Racing team mate Joey Logano. Kyle's brother Kurt was next fastest, 0.121s back.

Just 23 cars took part in the latter session. With the temperatures spiking on Friday, many drivers and teams opted to sit out the day's practice opportunity as it is likely to be unrepresentative of the cooler conditions expected for the race itself on Sunday. Teams have one further opportunity to practice before the Daytona 500, on Saturday morning.

The rest of Friday at Daytona sees qualifying for Saturday's Nationwide Series race, and qualifying for the evening's Camping World Truck Series event.
