Denny Hamlin won the STP 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway on Sunday afternoon, his 19th victory in 231 starts in the series and his second win in 2012.

Martin Truex Jr. came second after leading a total of 173 of the 267 race laps, which puts him 15pts behind Greg Biffle in the Sprint Cup championship points standings. Polesitter AJ Allmendinger finished in 32nd place after a throttle housing problem left him ten laps off the lead.

It's the 199th win for the #11 car in the series, with previous drivers making it to victory lane including Cale Yarborough, Ned Jarrett, Darrell Waltrip, Bill Elliott - and a win apiece for Indy 500 champions AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti and Parnelli Jones.

The race saw just three caution periods for a total of 18 laps, comprised of two debris cautions and a yellow for a spin by Clint Bowyer in turn 4 on lap 53. The number of lead changes (14) and total number of leaders (nine) were also record lows for the venue. Conversely the average speed of the race was 144.126 mph, which is a new high speed record at Kansas

Within hours of the departure of the crowds and the Sprint Cup cars, bulldozers moved in to begin the massive repaving project on the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval that will add new variable banking to the circuit for future events. Penske Racing's Brad Keselowski led the heavy machinery out to begin work - in a military tank, going some 110mph slower than his usual mode of transport here.
