Denny Hamlin took pole position for the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with Carl Edwards set to start alongside him on the front row on Sunday afternoon.
Denny Hamlin claimed pole position for the Brickyard 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motorspeedway, with a lap of 49.244s (182.763mph) set midway through the qualifying session putting him 0.211s faster than Carl Edwards on the 2.5-mile oval.

It's Hamlin's second pole of the year and the 11th of his 243 series race starts. It's the first time he's been able to take pole position at Indianapolis. Hamlin's Joe Gibbs Racing team mate Joey Logano will start from third place alongside Richard Petty Motorsports' Aric Almirola.

Josh Wise was the highest-qualifying rookie in 36th place. Trevor Bayne made the field in 18th place, but Reed Sorenson, Joe Nemechek and Michael McDowell all failed to qualify on speed for the 43-car grid.

Kasey Kahne (who went on to claim pole position for the Nationwide Series support race) had led the first practice session with a time of 48.563s (185.326 mph) but will start from 15th place on the grid, while Greg Biffle had claimed the honours in the second practice session with a lap of 49.587s (181.499 mph) and secured fifth place on the grid alongside Jimmie Johnson on the third row of Sunday afternoon's starting grid.
